Gaurika Singh and Shirish Gurung qualify for Rio Olympics

Swimmers Sirish Gurung and Gaurika Singh were selected for Rio Olympics 2016 to be held from August 5-21.

According to Nepal Swimming Association (NSA) the players were picked as per their qualification points in the Olympic Selection Tournament held in Russia and Dubai by FINA, the international apex swimming body.

The duo secured points required for participation in the Olympics, according to Ashok Bajracharya, the president of NSA.

Gurung will compete in men’s 100m freestyle, while Singh will swim in women’s 100m backstroke event.

With the confirmation of the swimmers, the number of Nepali athletes to participate in Rio Olympics has reached to seven.

Taekwondo player Nisha Rawal, judoka Phupu Lhamu Khatri and archer Jit Bahadur Moktan earned wildcards, while athletes Hari Rimal (5,000m) and Saraswoti Bhattarai (1,500m).
