AS Roma sign Federico Fazio from Spurs on a season-long loan

AS Roma completed the signing of Tottenham Hotspur’s Federico Fazio on an initial season-long loan with an option to buy on Wednesday.

The loan, which ends on 30 June 2017, is for a fixed fee of €1.2 million. The agreement also includes the option to make the transfer permanent, depending on the completion of certain sporting targets, for a fee of €3.2m.

“I am very happy to join a great team like Roma,” Fazio said. “I really want to start training and get to know my new teammates and coach.”

The defender did not make a single Premier League appearance last season, featuring only in the League Cup defeat to Arsenal, before his loan return to La Liga.

Fazio’s move to Roma comes just weeks after he was omitted from Spurs’ travelling squad for the International Champions Cup in Melbourne, despite the absence of first-choice centre-back pairing Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen following their appearances at the European Championship.

The centre-back, who has three caps for Argentina, joins after spending the second half of the 2015-16 season on loan at one of his former clubs, Sevilla.

He joined the Spanish side in 2007 from Ferro Carril Oeste, going on to make 192 appearances for the club in his first spell as he lifted the Europa League and Copa del Rey.

He moved to Spurs in 2014, before being loaned back to Sevilla in January – where he picked up another Europa League winners medal at the end of last season.
