Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka said: “You can’t imagine how delighted I am because it’s not usual to bring players like him to recently promoted teams.
“I’m really pleased because he is really committed. All the the conversations we’ve had he knows why he is here and he is coming to add to what we have.
“He knows how strong this group is. It’s a privilege for us to be able to bring a player like this to the club.”

Valdes joined Manchester United on an 18-month deal in January 2015, having finished his rehabilitation from a cruciate knee ligament injury with the club.
The 34-year-old tore ligaments playing for Barcelona almost a year earlier, ruling him out for the rest of the 2013-14 season and the 2014 World Cup; he was subsequently released at the end of his contract that summer.
Valdes is a product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy and made almost 400 La Liga appearances in a trophy-laden 12-year stay in the first-team. He also won 20 caps for Spain.
He becomes the fifth signing of the summer by the Premier League newcomers, following the arrivals of Viktor Fischer, Bernardo Espinosa, Marten de Roon, and young central defender Jordan McGhee.
