Antoine Griezmann signs new Atletico Madrid contract

Antoine Griezmann has ended speculation surrounding his future by signing a new deal with Atletico Madrid.

The France international had been heavily linked with a summer switch to the Premier League but he has committed his future to Atletico Madrid until 2021.

And the France forward has proved as good as his word, signing up for another five years at Atletico after finishing top scorer in each of his first two seasons at the club.

Griezmann’s goals have helped secure successive third-placed finishes, and he was on target seven times during last season’s run to the Champions League final.

“On a personal level, I would like to improve my goal scoring, minutes played, matches played, assists… my goal is always to improve upon what I have done the season before,” Griezmann told the club’s official website. “On a team level, we would also like to improve upon last season.

“The most basic thing is to continue with the key players we have and with our coach. We have the good fortune that the club wants to continue to improve and be a top club and that allows us to continue to grow.

“I can only thank the fans for all the support they have always given to this team and ask them to continue to support us as they have done up to this point. As for me, I want to say that I will continue to give my all on the pitch to thank them for all the kindness they show me.”

Sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero added: “I think this is great news for all Atletico fans because we are talking about an excellent football player, one of the best at his position.

“He has already shown his incredible talent over the first two seasons and with a huge growth margin. He is a player who is well loved and valued by our coach and by his teammates and admired by the fans and I can assure you that today they are very happy with this news.

“The club has made a firm promise to retain key football players and Antoine is one of those, so we should congratulate him on this renewal.”
