Shirish sets new national record in swimming

Shirish Gurung of Tribhuvan Army Club won three gold medals on the opening day of the 13th Galaxy Cup Inter-school Age-group and Open Swimming Championship at the Satdobato Swimming Complex on Tuesday.

Gurung, who has been selected as one of the six athletes for the Olympic Scholarship programme for Rio Games, bagged gold medals in the 200m freestyle along with 50m and 100m butterfly events.

Gurung completed the 200m freestyle event in two minutes and 18.79 seconds, finishing ahead of Anubhav Subba (2:28.13) and Avirajan Shini Thakuri (2:30.80).

In the 100m butterfly, Gurung won gold in 1:10:87, while Anubhav Subba came second in 1:16.28 and Nisir Yagha Hussain was third in 1:21.39.

Gurung also won 50m butterfly gold with the timing of 29.31 seconds,while Bhishma Baduwal came second in 29.84 seconds  and Dilip Thapa Magar (30.30).

Anubhav Subba of DAV won 50m backstroke by completing the distance in 34.59 seconds, Dilip took 34.72 seconds for second-position finish and Rahab Moktan finished third with a timing of 39.14 seconds. While Army’s Kiran Karki won 50m and 200m breaststroke gold medals. As he finished first 50m breaststroke in 33.75 seconds while he won 200m breaststoke in two minutes and 52.27 seconds.

In women’s sections, Oshina Bharati won 200m individual medley completing the distance in 3 minutes and 3.03 seconds. Shreetika Singh (3:07.59) and Tisa Shakya (3:11:74) finished second and third respectively.

Shreetika win gold in 100m freestyle completing the distance in 1 minute and 10.79 seconds, while Tisa (1 minute and 14.91 seconds) and Oshina (1 minute and 15.70 seconds) were second and third.

Shreetika also win gold medal in 50m backstroke completing the distance in 39.03 seconds. Oshina (40.12 seconds) and Niharika Tuladhar (41.22 seconds).

Army’s Sonira Bista (1 minute and 31.66 seconds), Niharika (1 minute and 37.81 seconds) and Shreetika (1 minute and 39.37 seconds) secured the top three positions in 100m breaststroke.

Oshina (3 minutes and 7.82 seconds), Shreetika (3 minutes and 14.16 seconds) and Tisa (3 minutes and 22.16 seconds) finished first to third respectively.
