Three Star Club beat East Bengal 2-1 to win Bordoloi Trophy
Three Star Club defeated East Bengal 2-1 to win the title of 64th Bordoloi Trophy at Nehru Stadium, Guwahati.
Three Star Club of Nepal beat East Bengal 2-1 in the final to win the title of 2016 Bordoloi Trophy on Friday at the Nehru Stadium in Guahati.
East Bengal took the lead in the 82nd minute through Somide Adelaja only for Devendra Tamang to equalize for Three Star Club just a minute before the full time and Bimal Gharti Magar struck the winner in the extra time crushing East Bengal’s hopes of lifting the title after 24 years.
Both teams started off with cushion without taking any risks as the action mostly restricted in midfield in the first quarter. But as the game progressed the visitors gradually gained control over the proceedings.
While pushing forward East Bengal had close chances through Jiten Murmu and Adelaja but the strike was denied by the Three Star defense as first half ended goalless.
East Bengal came out all guns blazing in the second half as they attacked by pushing high up. The pressure paid off as the Red and Golds finally broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute when Adelaja head home off a Jiten Murmu cross to put East Bengal 1-0 up.
Having conceded, Three Star took the attack on to the East Bengal half and equalized just a minute before the full-time through Tamang to take the match to extra time.
Three Star began the extra time on the front foot and having gone close on a few occasions early on, the Nepalese side took the lead in the 99th minute through Magar.
In the remiander of the extra time Three Star Club produced a solid defensive performance to protect their lead and crowned the new kings of the Bordoloi Trophy.
