Middlesbrough sign Calum Chambers from Arsenal on a season-long loan deal

Middlesbrough have signed Arsenal defender Calum Chambers on a season-long loan deal.

Newly promoted Boro fought off interest from a number of clubs including Roma and Hull to secure the 21-year-old’s services.

Aitor Karanka said: “I’m really pleased. “It’s a position where we’ve been working towards bringing the right player in.

“We haven’t been in a hurry because Calum was the player we were waiting for, and he’s going to help us a lot.

“I’d like to say thank you to him because we know he had another offer, but he wanted to come here. That’s important and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

Chambers himself took to Twitter to talk up his move. “Pleased to sign on loan for Boro,” he tweeted.

“Excited about the season ahead and can’t wait to get working.”

The 21-year-old, who can play centrally or at right-back, joined the Gunners from Southampton for £16m in 2014.

He has made 59 appearances for the Gunners both at right-back and at the centre of defence.

Chambers is Boro’s 11th signing this summer, with the Premier League club bringing in goalkeeper Victor Valdes, striker Alvaro Negredo and midfielder Marten de Roon among others.
