Mark Clattenburg to referee Euro 2016 final between France and Portugal

Mark Clattenburg has been selected as the referee for Sunday’s Euro 2016 final between Portugal and France.

The appointment means Clattenburg will complete a remarkable treble this summer, having already officiated the FA Cup final and Champions League final in May.

Clattenburg has officiated in three games at the finals to date, including a 2-2 draw between Croatia and the Czech Republic which he briefly halted due to trouble in the stands.

He was also in charge for Belgium’s group-stage defeat to Italy and Poland’s penalty shoot-out win over Switzerland in the last 16.

The 41-year-old has shown 12 yellow cards and is yet to send off a player.

The 41-year-old becomes just the second referee to take charge of both European finals in the same year following Pedro Proenca in 2012, while he was the first in history to take charge of the FA Cup and Champions League finals in the same season.

The Premier League official is due to be joined by English assistants Simon Beck and Jake Collin at the Stade de France on Sunday, as well as compatriot additional assistants Anthony Taylor and Andre Marriner. Hungary’s Viktor Kassai, meanwhile, will be the fourth official, while compatriot Gyorgy Ring has been appointed reserve assistant referee.

Former electrician Clattenburg, who has been an international referee since 2007, has also refereed the 2012 Olympic men’s final and 2014 UEFA Super Cup among others, while he has already taken charge of three games at Euro 2016.

He is the first Englishman to referee a European Championship final since Arthur Ellis in 1960 and Arthur Holland in 1964
